Things just got real! Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who served on the Supreme Court since 1993, passed away at the age of 87. She consistently ruled with the liberal side of the court, and in the 2000 case Gore v Bush, she famously wrote “I dissent” instead of the traditional “I respectively dissent." It has been no secret that her seat would most likely be the next one to be open, but I wasn’t sure it would be in this term or the next. I really thought she was determined to make it until there was a switch in control of the White House. She proved to be very strong and resilient as she has battled health problems for the last several years. I think if it had been a Democrat president, she would have retired but you have to give her credit for her determination and commitment. Now the conversation has turned to when the opening will be filled. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and the President have called for a replacement before the election. Senator Ted Cruz has also said that we could have a crisis if we go into the election with a 4-4 court. If this election goes to the Supreme Court, much like the 2000 Bush/Gore election, we could be in trouble. Can the seat be filled prior to the election? I don’t see how, but since the President has been maintaining a list, he could send a nomination to the senate as early as next week. The Democrats will do everything they can to fight and delay. I don’t know if I would want to be that nominee based on what Justice Kavanaugh went through. I think this process could be even worse because this nominee can shift the balance of the court. The President has announced that the nominee will be a woman. A woman nominee will put the Democrats in an interesting position as they try to determine how to destroy this judge. The Democrats will reveal their true colors about how they really feel about women. If we didn’t have enough evidence about the importance of this election, this vacant Supreme Court seat has just elevated it. Also, our control of the Senate is also at stake, so we need to get everyone out to vote RED. Our 2nd Amendment rights are in serious jeopardy. If we lose the election and the Supreme Court, they will come for our guns. It is important to get out to vote and get all of our gun-loving friends and family to vote as well.
